Our Skin
The skin is made of two layers – the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the upper most layer which contains pigment-producing cells that give skin it’s colour. The epidermis renews itself constantly. New cells are born in the lover (basal cell) layer of the epidermis. These mature as they gradually rise to the surfact where they ultimately die and fall off.
The dermis contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, seat glands and oil glands and is found below the epidermis. Hair follicles are extentions of the epidermis into the dermis. The dermis is made up of networks of elastic fibres (Elastin) for suppleness and dense fibres (collagen) for strength. A layer of fatty tissue lies below the skin and gives it structure.
